A Proper Job
- Eric Thompson
While at school I was offered a place at Art College, my Dad wasn’t keen on this idea and instead encouraged me to secure an apprenticeship in a factory, aiming for financial stability.
Although it was challenging to reflect on that decision, the apprenticeship had a transformative effect on me, allowing me to lead a fulfilling life beyond the realm of art.
I have witnessed numerous artists who, influenced by their tutors during their college years, became fixated on the notion that creating abstract art was the key to achieving great sales. In their pursuit of following a formula dictated by the college, they seemed to forget that art should evoke an emotional connection with the viewer.
We Don't Need Your Type Of Art
This realisation became evident to me when I participated in a prominent exhibition organised by various colleges, where I submitted two large landscape paintings, representing traditional art. Surrounded by abstract works created by students, my paintings failed to impress the selection experts. However, to my surprise, when the general public attending the exhibition were asked to select their favorite paintings using cards, both of my paintings emerged as the top choices. Encouraged by this response, I approached the gallery to inquire about the possibility of hosting an exhibition showcasing my work. Unfortunately, I was informed that my style of painting was considered too conventional and did not align with their preferred direction.
