Our art classes in our gallery
"I have known Eric Thompson for over 20 years, first as a member of his ‘live’ classes and latterly of the online courses which he delivers
His classes consist mainly of instruction in watercolours, but he also uses coloured pencils, pastels, pastel pencils and acrylic paint when these are a more appropriate medium for the subject. His choice of subject covers a wide range of interests so that there is something for everyone.
Eric is an excellent artist and an excellent communicator, and he combines these skills to great effect when delivering his classes. As he is painting he chats in an easy, friendly style with his pupils, whilst at the same time ensuring that they understand what he is doing, what he is using, and why on both counts.
He has also compiled a huge library of videos which is available to members of the classes. This is very useful to people like myself who prefer to watch and paint later, rather than paint along with Eric in real time.
I have no hesitation in recommending Eric’s online classes to anyone who wishes to improve their painting skills. You will be delighted with your progress I’m sure."
From lollipop trees and Mr Blobby people attending Eric’s art classes, initially in his classroom studio, then online, has converted this novice but wannabe artist into being able to create paintings that I am not embarrassed to show people - who then want to frame them and hang them on their walls!
Eric makes art fun - he has a naturally relaxed, humorous manner while retaining an innate teaching ability which imparts, apparently by magic, the techniques required to produce works of art.
While watercolour is the main medium used, we often diversify into pastels, acrylics, pen and ink, coloured pencils etc and achieve exciting and sometimes unexpected results!
I look forward to our regular weekly online demonstrations and classes, but now feel confident enough to go off-piste and paint my own pictures for pleasure and sense of accomplishment.
I can heartily recommend that anyone who feels tempted to give painting a try, but might lack the initial confidence, give Eric’s very reasonably priced online Art Classes a try.
Happy painting,
I’ve been painting with Eric for well over 25 years. I’ve always enjoyed his classes. Why ? They are instructive, inspiring and great value for money. An email pops into your inbox telling you what the next class is a couple of days beforehand so you can if you are following him live get your painting materials together and print out the subject so you have a reference picture.
The variety of subject’s and styles are very broad based, something to suit everyone. If you can’t paint along with Eric there’s a folder which you can access containing his previous lessons. The beauty of these are you can pause them whilst painting or to return to them later.
His instructions are clear and concise, easily understood and to follow. Once a member you can easily access your folder with artworks in , they are all in one place, no need to spend hours looking on the internet for something to paint.

I was lucky enough to be able to join Eric Thompson's art classes about ten years ago as there was a waiting list to enrol because of the class sizes, but a friend was retiring through ill health so I managed to fill his place.
I had had a few lessons with a couple of tutors so I wasn't a complete novice but because we have tackled lots of subjects ie. landscapes, waterscapes, buildings, animals, people, portraits etc in Eric's easy but informative style and learnt his techniques, I now feel much more capable of painting pictures for friends. I used to find water scenery particularly daunting but now feel completely comfortable tackling seas, rivers or ponds.
The lessons are online now and we receive notice of an uploaded picture of the subject that we are going to paint a day before the lesson starts. Each lesson lasts two hours and may be completed in that time or take three to four instalments to complete the picture. All his lessons are recorded so that you can go into his library and watch his work in your own time.
Watercolours are his main medium but he also teaches using acrylics, pastels, coloured pencils and pen and ink.
To sum up Eric's lessons are suitable for complete beginners to accomplished painters who enjoy doing art work alongside other art lovers and because the lessons are online there is no waiting list to join. As you are doing these lessons in the comfort of your own home, you can show off your work or keep it to yourself.
A word of warning, these lessons become addictive and you won't want to pack them in as the material keeps on coming.
